Story: The Sleep of the Dead

The god Cupid, son of Venus, had been gravely injured and was recovering at his mother’s palace. During his recovery, his mother sought out his wife Psyche. Venus was jealous of Psyche because of her beauty. Psyche was a mortal and was so beautiful that other people would praise her and forgot to praise Venus. This did not sit well with Venus, so she sought to destroy Psyche however she could. Venus finally found Psyche and made her perform impossible tasks, like sorting grain and obtaining a sample of dangerous water. Psyche completed every task, but Venus was not satisfied. The completed tasks only fueled her rage and resulted in another task that was more difficult than the one before. Psyche’s third task was to obtain a vial of beauty from Proserpine in the underworld. She was warned not to look in the vial regardless of how persistent her curiosity became. However, Psyche did not listen. She was an extremely curious girl and it got the better of her. As soon as she opened the vial she fell into a deep sleep.

Cupid began to feel better and went looking for his precious Psyche. He finally located her and instantly went to where she slept. “Why do you have to be so curious,” he asked. “Have you never heard the saying ‘Curiosity killed the cat’?” Once he had finished lecturing her peaceful self, he gracefully bent over her sleeping form and lightly brushed his lips against hers. As soon as his lips came into contact with hers, she awoke.

Now that she was awake he quickly chided her again saying, “You must be more careful my silly wife and must not let your curiosity get the better of you.” Psyche apologized and began to tell Cupid of all the things his mother had done. “Take this vial to her and complete your third task, so that you may gain some favor with her. I will take care of the rest.” After uttering this command, he flew off to seek support from Jupiter. Cupid fell on his knees and begged Jupiter for help with his mother and support for his marriage. Jupiter, who had been pranked many times by Cupid, decided he would toy with him a little before agreeing to help. He told Cupid that there was not a good reason for him to help because Cupid had only ever caused him misery and did not fully respect him. Cupid, now beginning to panic ever so slightly, proceeded to apologize profusely. He was becoming so nervous that he was almost in tears. Jupiter found great pleasure in this and began to chuckle. “I’m sorry,” he said. “I simply could not resist this opportunity at payback. I will help you boy. I will tell your mother that she has no choice but to get over her jealousy and displeasure with Psyche. I will also see to it that this marriage is made official and that Psyche becomes immortal.” Cupid sighed a great sigh of relief and thanked Jupiter for his kindness.

Psyche, relieved to have seen her husband and to have gained some reassurance, headed back to Venus’s palace to complete her final task. She entered into her mother-in-law’s chambers and presented her with the vial. Venus was a little impressed. She had given Psyche one of the hardest tasks known to man and she passed. Venus had tempted and tormented her in every way she could think, and yet Psyche never failed. “If this girl is strong enough to withstand my torture and can complete these tasks with no fear, then I guess she might be a decent fit for my son,” she thought to herself. However, she was not going to tell Psyche any of this because that would mean Psyche had won. So, she decided to act unimpressed. “There is no doubt that someone helped you complete this task,” she said to Psyche. “Do you think that I am dumb? There is no way that a mere mortal such as your self could complete these tasks the way you did.” Psyche was beginning to lose hope. Would she ever be able to get Venus off her back? Just as Psyche was about to let despair take hold, Cupid came flying into the chambers. “I have news mother,” he began. “I have spoken to Jupiter and he has agreed to honor my marriage to Psyche and to make it completely official by turning Psyche immortal.” Venus was taken aback. She was starting to hate the girl less, but she did not like being left out of important decisions. “I do not condone this, therefore it may not take place,” she said. “You have no say in the matter,” Cupid replied. “Jupiter has agreed to do this and has informed me to tell you that you are to get over your childish jealousy at once.” Venus was shocked, but there was nothing she could do since these orders had come from Jupiter. Psyche ran to her beloved husband and embraced him tight. She began to cry quietly, relieved that it was all over. They could finally be together and now had forever to look forward to. Happily ever after was finally theirs.

Author’s note: The inspiration for this story was from The Sleep of the Dead. In this particular story, Psyche has just completed her third task for Venus, obtaining a vial of beauty from Proserpine, and decides to take some for herself. When she opens the vial, however, she does not find beauty but is overcome by a deep sleep. Cupid, who had been injured, has healed and goes to Psyche. He wipes off the sleep and returns it to the jar. He then awakens Psyche with an arrow and tells her to finish her task and then goes to Jupiter for help. Jupiter responds by listing all the things Cupid has done to him, but agrees to what he asks despite Cupid’s disrespect.

I decided to elaborate on this story more. I first changed how Cupid woke Psyche up. I thought it would be interesting to give it a Disney feel and have Psyche be awoken by a kiss like in Sleeping Beauty. Aurora also fell into a deep sleep because of curiosity and I thought these similarities would help make the story a little more interesting. I also changed the interaction between Cupid and Jupiter a little. Instead of Jupiter saying “I’ll help you despite what you’ve done,” I had him toy with Cupid a little to get payback for the things that he had done. I also had Jupiter say that he would take care of Venus. The part that I was most excited about was elaborating on the interaction between Venus and Psyche when Psyche returned with the completed task. I thought it would be interesting to show that Venus was impressed, but that she was so proud that she would not admit it. I also thought it would be good to show that Venus was starting to warm up to Psyche a little bit. I thought it was important to have Cupid come tell his mother that Jupiter was supporting the marriage and was demanding that she back off because it kind of let Venus off the hook. She could allow them to still be married, but she didn’t have to admit that she was starting to like Psyche. Her pride was still intact, despite being told what to do.

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche part B

The story of Venus and Psyche reminds me of part of a book I really enjoy, The Iron King. In the book Megan has traveled to the land of the fey where her father is king of the summer court. His wife Titania dislikes Megan because she is the product of her husband’s affair with a mortal. So, once Titania gets Megan alone she tries to torture her and turn her into an animal. I could change the story to where Venus tries to change Psyche into an animal. I could also change the story to where Cupid intervenes sooner.

The Sleep of the Dead was also interesting. I thought it might be fun to have Cupid kiss Psyche awake instead. I also was curious as to how Venus reacted when Psyche returned, completing the final task. It would be fun to elaborate on this. I could have Venus be impressed, or at least less angry, or I could have her still be upset but have no choice but to release her because Jupiter tells her to do so. I think this is probably the story I will use for my storytelling post.

Reading Notes: Cupid and Psyche part A

The story of Psyche’s Beauty and the Anger of Venus sparked my attention. It reminded me a little of Snow White. Venus’s jealousy of all the attention Psyche is receiving reminded me of the evil queen’s jealousy towards Snow White’s growing beauty. I could try to mesh the stories together or create a more modern version that incorporates both stories. For example, I could do a story where the popular high school girl, Valerie, is threatened by the presence of the new girl, Penny.

The Oracle of Apollo was also interesting to me. This girl is incredibly beautiful, but because it is so extraordinary there is not a suitor who is brave enough to marry her. They are all intimidated by her beauty. I could take this story and set it in an Elizabethan setting, where Psyche is a princess to a powerful king, but because of his great power and her unnerving beauty no one offers to take her hand, or something along those lines. I could also do a gender flip, where Psyche is a male and is still enduring the same fate because the females are too self-conscious to be wed to such perfection. I’m not sure how I could incorporate the part of the oracle, maybe in a modern story it could be a horoscope or a fortune teller. That could be interesting.

Growth Mindset: My thoughts

I have never heard of Carol Dweck or the growth mindset, but once I started reading the transcripts and watching the videos, I became intrigued. I completely agree with what she is saying. I have always thought that we focus too much on the score that is given and not enough on whether or not kids are actually learning material. I admit that sometimes I focus more on just passing a test than I do on making sure I actually know the material I am studying. I think that it does cheat kids out of getting the full experience of learning and maintaining knowledge.
I could definitely work on having more of a growth mindset in my own academic career. While at OU I have noticed that I can sometimes be lazy when it comes to my school work. I am pretty good at remembering things, so I can put off studying until a few days before, cram, and still make a decent score on the exam. I've found that this can sometimes hinder my actual learning of the material; instead of learning and understanding the different concepts, I am merely memorizing them for a short time. I definitely have to work at this habit, so that I can have a full understanding of what I am learning and so I can better enjoy the courses I am taking.
I am very interested in learning more about the growth mindset and how I can apply it to my own learning and study habits.
I think learning more about growth mindset and applying it could definitely help me in my Physics class. I am not particularly excited for that class, but I think having more of a growth mindset would make it a little more enjoyable and would help me better understand what is going on.

Starting the Semester

I think the most beneficial organizational tip that was given was the word count app in the browser. I think that having a browser app will make it a lot easier and faster to know the word count since many of our posts have to be specific lengths. It is way easier than having to open a word document so that I can see how many words I have written and then copying and pasting the post into my actual blog. I will definitely be using this tip.

Reading Options

My choice for week 2 is Apuleius's Cupid and Psyche. I love all things having to do with fairy tales, so naturally this one caught my eye. I especially found it intriguing that it was compared to Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my favorite Disney tales.

One of the other units that I thought would be interesting was Europa's Fairy Book. As you can see, I wasn't lying about loving fairy tales. I think what drew my attention to this particular one was that it incorporated many different versions of fairy tales. I'm interested to see what will be familiar to me and what will be different from what I already know.

This image was definitely the most eye catching of the four that I encountered while browsing

The second one that caught my eye was Beowulf. I was interested in this one because I also like heroic tales. I was also drawn to this one because many of my friends had to read this in high school, but I never did. They would always talk about it and I have always been curious to see what exactly they were talking about.

The third unit that drew my attention was Twenty-Two Goblins. I have always enjoyed riddles, so as soon as I read that there were riddles involved, I was hooked. The plot in general just sounds very intriguing and I am interested to see how it unfolds!

My Storybook Favorites

I was already familiar with most of the topics presented in this Storybook. The only thing that was new to me was that of Belle’s sisters. I had never heard that part of the story before. It was very intriguing. The introduction does a great job of setting up the story as a gossip site. It kind of reminds me of the show Gossip Girl. It also does a good job of setting up the first story, so that the reader will keep reading in order to learn more. Overall the design was good. It looked like a basic layout, but I thought it was smoothly put together. The navigation was also set up well, with the introduction to the site and then the three different stories following.

I really liked this Storybook for a few reasons. The first being simply that I love cats. A lot. The second being that I got to learn about stories of cats from different cultures. I had a small amount of knowledge over the story of Bastet, but the other two stories were completely new to me. The introduction was pretty clever. I enjoyed how it gave cats human like qualities and also incorporated time travel. It was different enough to make me want to read more. I thought the images helped solidify the stories and that the navigation flowed smoothly from story to story.

This Storybook had topics that I was familiar with, as well as ones that I was not. I’ve heard the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Snow White, etc. However, I had not heard the tale of The Robber Bridegroom or Fitcher’s Bird. These stories were both brand new to me. I think the introduction to this topic was well played out. It grabbed my attention by presenting itself as a talk show with other characters as viewers at home. I thought the design of the Storybook was also well thought out. It used a dark background to coincide with the dark matter of the stories being talked about. They also did a good job at finding images of the stories to insert into the pages. The navigation is well put together, starting with the introduction of the show and then adding on the different guests.

Introduction to the Student Mom

My name is Cassie Lunsford and I am a junior studying Health and Exercise Science. I hope to go on to Physician’s Associate school after I earn my bachelors. I am a mommy to a three year old boy and a two week old boy. My husband is in the Air Force and is fixing to be deployed for the first time in October. My kids are my life. I don't really have any hobbies besides taking care of them, but that doesn't really bother me much.

I love to read! A few of my favorites are North of Beautiful, The Maze Runner trilogy, and The Door Within trilogy. I also greatly enjoy movies, but I can't think of my favorite off the top of my head. My favorite tv shows are probably Grey’s Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and Supernatural. My music taste covers a wide variety. From Fall Out Boy and Panic at the Disco, to Michael Buble and Josh Groban. I also like Dan and Shay, Thomas Rhett, and Maroon 5.

My career goals are to become a Physician’s Associate. At least that's my practical goal. My wild and crazy dream goal would be to either act or sing professionally.
I have a five month old German Shepherd who is a spoiled brat. She's more spoiled than my three year old son.

Favorite foods…. Hmm. I love ice cream, pretty much any flavor. I also really like wavy potato chips. As for my favorite meal, that would probably have to be steak. It's just fantastic.

If I had an extra day for fun, I'd probably spend it hanging out with my kids and my husband. It wouldn't really matter to me what we were doing. I just love spending time with them. Like I said most of my hobbies include taking care of my kids, but I really love taking care of them. I always look forward to spending time with them during the day. I especially love when my husband is able to get to spend a large amount of time with us as well. He works the night shift at his base and so he sleeps during the day. So getting to spend time with him is something I look forward to also.
That's me :)

Story: Fearless Jack

Jack be nimble,
And, Jack be quick;
And, Jack jump over
The candlestick

Jack was the leader of his group of friends. Jack and The guys were always daring each other to do crazy stunts and stupid tricks. There wasn't anything that was off limits when it came to their dares. They wanted to see how far they could push each other. Jack, being the leader, was usually the one who was being dared to do something. It was as if his friends wanted to make sure they chose their leader correctly. One weekend Jack and the boys decided they were going to go on a camping trip. They loaded up a car and a trailer and headed off for the weekend. Once they got to the campsite they set up their tents and started a campfire.

As they were sitting around the campfire they started their usual game of dares. The more dares that were completed, the more hyped up the boys got, and the more elaborate the dares became. It was Jack’s turn to take a dare. One of the guys spoke up with what they thought was the perfect dare. “Hey man,” he said. “I bet you can't jump over the campfire.” Jack, being the macho man that he is, could not chicken out of a dare. What kind of leader would he be then? So, he accepted the challenge. He started stretching so that his legs would be limber enough to make the jump. Then, he did a few short sprints around the campfire to ensure that he would have enough speed to clear the flames. Once he felt ready, Jack walked about ten feet away from the campfire so he could get a running start. He got into a running stance and when he had worked up the courage, he took off toward the fire. Now Jack was a natural born athlete, so he easily cleared the campfire and safely landed on the other side. His friends cheered and congratulated their fearless leader. Once again Jack came through and once again impressed his crew.

Author's Note: This is a pretty common nursery rhyme. I've heard it many times and recited it many times as well. The more I thought about it, the more it reminded me of a a chant used to egg someone on. It also reminded me of my younger brother and his friends and how they like to make each other do goofy things.

Bibliography: This story was inspired by and based on the nursery rhyme "Jack Be Nimble" in The Nursery Rhyme Book, edited by Andrew Lang.

My Favorite Place: Home

My favorite place is located in Yukon, Oklahoma. It is home. I know that it's kind of a cop out, but it really is my favorite place. It's where I get to spend time with my three year old and newborn. It's where I get to watch my husband try to make new things for dinner. It's where I get to relax and enjoy the time I get to spend with the three of them and where we get to make our memories. It is a little cliché, but it's the truth. My favorite place is home.
